  84. I've recently gotten an R-4B and am quite pleased with its performance
  85. I'd like to extend coverage, however, and don't want to go broke on
  86. crystals. I'm planing to build a substitution box which would be
  87. essentially a coarse frequency synthesizer. Since the range is broad,
  88. I'm  planning to start at 50-80 Mhz and heterodyne down to the
  89. necessary frequencies for the preinjection mixing. I'm interested in
  90. any references as to the injection level for the crystal port. Since
  91. it's coupled to the grid of the HS6 premixer I'd guess that necessary
  92. drive levels would be low. Any hints or references on the subject
  93. would be welcome. Thanks.

  108.     I have recently brought an old Kenwood TR-7800
  109.     2m FM-rig. I use it mainly for mobile, and have
  110.     +12V DC connected from the car battery. I think 
  111.     this +12V is used for memory backup as well.
  112.  
  113.     Sometimes rig needs to be disconnected, though, as
  114.     I would rather not leave the rig in a parked car
  115.     overnight. There are four NiCd cells for memory
  116.     backup, but current drain is so high batteries run
  117.     out in a matter of days.
  118.  
  119.     NiCd's get charged when rig is connected to power
  120.     supply and turned on. But I do not need my rig every
  121.     day and would rather not have a big 12V/20A power supply
  122.     on just to have +12 on power conenctors to keep memory and
  123.     charge those NiCd's.
  124.  
  125.     There is small 3-pole male connector in the back of the rig
  126.     labeled "backup". This is intented for a small power supply,
  127.     just a few mA to keep memory. Such power supply is no longer
  128.     available and I have no documentation about connectors. I
  129.     was thinking of a small supply, if I would only know what
  130.     voltage & polarity the pins are... Maybe the connector also
  131.     needs to be changed because I haven't found female connector.
  132.     (like microphones, have you ever seen same kind of connector
  133.     in two different rigs..).

  170. A friend just constructed the powersupply described in the
  171. ARRL Handbook page 27-3 in the 1994 book (the page changes
  172. depending on the handbook publishing year)
  173. A few modifications were made in order for the supply to be
  174. 25 Ampere able (by using a different power transistor
  175. and a larger transformer).
  176. The supply worked fine, it only dropped it's voltage by
  177. 0.1 volts at 25 A. and all seemed fine untill we noticed
  178. something really strange...
  179. While having a TS140S hooked on the power supply, and while
  180. the radio itself was off, when the supply was turned off
  181. the voltage would jump to full voltage (30V+) for a second
  182. or two before the capacitors would discharge...
  183. While trying to simulate the affect with a 25A load (several
  184. automotive lamps) the supply did nothing out of the ordinary
  185. and no such "spike" was detected! 
  186. Has anyone seen anything like the above mentioned effect ?
